Few cities sparkle in winter quite like Philadelphia. Each year, the city bursts with light shows, pop-up markets, and festive attractions that celebrate the season in grand style. One of the most magical experiences — and one that I can personally vouch for — is LumiNature at the Philadelphia Zoo.

My visit to LumiNature last year was nothing short of enchanting. Walking through the illuminated animal sculptures, each section glowing with color and music, felt like stepping into a living piece of art. It’s a one-of-a-kind celebration of light and wildlife that delights both kids and adults. I shared more about that visit in my review of LumiNature and even captured some highlights on Instagram. I can’t wait to return this season to see how the zoo has reimagined the experience.

Beyond LumiNature, Philadelphia offers an incredible mix of winter attractions — from the Christmas Village in LOVE Park to skating at Dilworth Park beneath the glow of City Hall. It’s also a great time to use hotel points for a stay at one of the city’s many Marriott or Hilton properties, where festive packages and late checkout perks make holiday travel even sweeter.

Bucks County: A Storybook Setting for the Holidays

Just north of the city lies Bucks County — a place that truly feels like it was made for winter. As someone who calls Langhorne home, I’ve long appreciated the region’s charm, but the holiday season gives it an entirely new glow.

At the heart of Bucks County’s winter magic is Peddler’s Village. With its cobblestone walkways, quaint boutiques, and more than one million lights, it’s like walking through a holiday movie set. From the gingerbread house display to festive dining options and carriage rides, Peddler’s Village is a must-visit for anyone looking to slow down and soak in the season. It’s no surprise that visitors from all over the Mid-Atlantic make it part of their holiday travel traditions.

Bucks County is also a region that knows how to make the most of its winter economy. In my piece “The Economics and Marketing of Light Shows During the Christmas Season”, I explored how local events not only bring joy but also drive community growth and small business success — a testament to how local experiences can light up more than just the night sky.

And of course, if you’re a points-and-miles traveler, Bucks County offers a variety of nearby stays where you can redeem rewards, from charming Hilton Garden Inns to Marriott Courtyards, making it easy to turn a short getaway into a relaxing retreat.

State College: Winter Sports, College Spirit, and the Great Outdoors

Few places in Pennsylvania capture the excitement of winter like State College — home of Penn State University and the Nittany Lions. This year, the energy will be especially electric thanks to a truly historic event: the Hockey Valley Winter Classic in Beaver Stadium.

For the first time ever, Penn State Men’s Ice Hockey will take the ice outdoors at Beaver Stadium in January, transforming the legendary football field into a winter sports arena. This one-of-a-kind spectacle will bring thousands of fans to State College and mark a milestone moment for college hockey. If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to visit “Happy Valley” in winter, this is it.

While you’re there, enjoy the region’s natural beauty — from winter hikes at Mount Nittany to cozy evenings downtown filled with great food and local craft brews. Fans of outdoor adventure can also explore Tussey Mountain for skiing and snow tubing. With State College’s welcoming spirit and a full calendar of events, it’s a destination that blends sports, community, and celebration perfectly.

For travelers using rewards, The Graduate State College and Courtyard by Marriott are both excellent redemptions — offering proximity to campus, modern amenities, and great value for your points.

Bethlehem and the Lehigh Valley: Pennsylvania’s Christmas Capital

If your travels take you east toward the Lehigh Valley, don’t miss Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem — one of the country’s top holiday markets. Located in the shadow of the historic Bethlehem Steel stacks, this festival features handmade gifts, local artisans, live music, and plenty of hot cider and strudel. It’s a perfect day trip from Bucks County or Philadelphia, and it captures the warmth and nostalgia of old-world holiday traditions with a distinctly Pennsylvania flair.

Making the Most of Winter Travel

No matter where you go in Pennsylvania this winter, the key is to plan smart and travel strategically. As a frequent traveler and proud member of loyalty programs like American Airlines AAdvantage, Hilton Honors, and Marriott Bonvoy, I’ve learned that winter trips are a great time to redeem miles and points. Airfares are often lower, hotel availability is higher, and with a bit of flexibility, you can turn a short escape into an affordable, luxurious getaway.

Consider using your credit card’s travel portal to combine hotel and rental car redemptions, or book directly with brands offering double-point promotions during the holiday season. It’s a win-win — you enjoy unforgettable experiences while maximizing your travel rewards.

Conclusion: Pennsylvania’s Winter Magic Awaits

Pennsylvania offers a rare blend of urban excitement, small-town charm, and natural beauty — all amplified during the winter months. From the dazzling lights of Philadelphia to the storybook scenes of Bucks County and the roaring crowd at Beaver Stadium, every corner of the Keystone State invites you to celebrate, explore, and make memories.

Whether you’re strolling through LumiNature, cheering for Penn State Hockey, or sipping cocoa in Peddler’s Village, winter in Pennsylvania is more than a season — it’s a feeling of warmth, community, and discovery.

So pack your bags, cash in those travel rewards, and get ready to explore the best of the Pennsylvania winter. The lights are shining, the cocoa’s warm, and adventure is just a drive — or flight — away.
