If you spend any time in the Lehigh Valley, you’ll quickly realize that it’s a place full of students, educators, and researchers. Higher education plays a huge role in the culture and economy here. As someone who has spent decades working in education and communication, I’ve always appreciated the energy that comes from living near a vibrant college community.
One of the most recognizable names in the area is Penn State Lehigh Valley. It’s a smaller campus, tucked right into Center Valley, which gives students the intimacy of a close-knit college with the resources of a world-class university. I’ve visited the campus many times over the years, and I’ve always found it welcoming and full of ambition.

Bethlehem might be my favorite for brunch and casual bites. I’ve had amazing meals at places that combine creative twists on breakfast classics with the charm of a neighborhood café. One spot I always recommend is a cozy brunch place that serves eggs, avocado toast, and fresh pastries that would rival any big-city bakery.
In Allentown, there’s an old-school seafood restaurant that has stood the test of time. Think dim lighting, a cozy bar, and some of the freshest scallops you’ll find in Pennsylvania. It’s the kind of place you go to celebrate something or just treat yourself after a long week. There’s also a no-fuss pub where locals gather for burgers and beer—it’s a little loud, a little lived-in, and full of character.
Easton brings its own flavor. Literally. It’s walkable and packed with hidden gems. I’ve had farm-to-table meals with hand-crafted cocktails and dishes made with local ingredients that change with the seasons. And during restaurant week, the whole valley becomes a playground of prix-fixe menus and kitchen creativity. From wood-fired pizza to Mediterranean dishes, from bistros to breweries, there’s always something new and unexpected to try.
Even Center Valley, where you might think it’s all chain restaurants and retail, has its surprises. I’ve found sleek, modern spots with incredible views and upscale menus. Perfect for date nights, business lunches, or a quiet evening to yourself.
The Soul of the Region: Attractions and Local Fun
What really makes Lehigh Valley special is how well it blends the old and the new. You’ve got historic sites right next to modern concert venues. Rolling hills that lead to boutique hotels. And communities that care deeply about both their heritage and their future.
One of my favorite places to visit is the former Bethlehem Steel site. It’s now known as SteelStacks, and it’s one of the most visually stunning attractions in the entire region. The old steel structures tower over what’s now a thriving arts and culture space. Live music, food trucks, outdoor movies—it’s all happening here, especially during Musikfest, one of the biggest festivals in the state.
Nature lovers aren’t left out either. Just outside the cities are beautiful hiking trails, peaceful canal paths, and parks where you can kayak, fish, or just take a walk. Hawk Mountain is a bit of a drive, but the views are worth every mile. I once spent an October afternoon there, watching the hawks soar overhead and enjoying the kind of fall foliage that makes you forget to check your phone.
Families will love Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom, especially in the summer. I don’t care how old you are—there’s nothing quite like the rush of a good rollercoaster followed by a soft-serve cone. And if you’re a baseball fan, catching an IronPigs game at Coca-Cola Park is a must. The energy is infectious, and the food is surprisingly gourmet for a ballpark.
Easton is home to some quirky attractions too, like the Crayola Experience, where kids can literally watch crayons being made. It’s colorful, creative, and somehow equally fun for adults.

Lehigh Valley isn’t just for visitors. It’s for locals, weekenders, and long-term lovers of small cities with big personalities. I’ve spent a lot of time here over the years—working, eating, speaking, and simply enjoying what the region has to offer. Center Valley in particular feels like a hidden gem. It’s central to everything. A quiet, accessible spot where Penn State Lehigh Valley anchors a growing community.
You don’t need to have grown up here to feel like you belong. The people are friendly, the pace is just right, and the mix of nature, nightlife, and neighborhood pride creates a setting that feels both exciting and grounding.
